10 Things You Learn When Injured

It’s been no secret that I have had my fair share of injuries. I think all javelin throwers would agree it’s not a very forgiving event. Trying to be the best in your sport often leaves us feeling aches and pains that we didn’t hope to feel until we were much older. It’s the price we pay for what we love. But it isn’t all bad. Below (in no particular order) are my top 10 things you learn while being injured. 1. You aren’t ...continue reading

I’m Back

After almost a year off my blog I am here to say, I am back! No I didn’t stop training, or competing, but I was stuck in a slump last year that I didn’t ever care to share. With the Olympic Games only a year away I am more focused than ever to make the team and fulfill my dreams. So what happened while I was “away”? I moved to the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista California (San Diego) in order to get the best nutrition, ...continue reading

Perfect fit in California

I moved to the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista California five weeks ago and I couldn't be happier for the change. The training center definitely has its perks and its downfalls, most notably the dorm rooms you have to live in, but they haven’t bothered me as much as I thought. The “Suites” as they call them here, are 400 square foot apartments with two bedrooms and two bathrooms, which sleep two athletes in each room in ...continue reading

Making big changes

I am making one of the biggest decisions of my life this week and making one of the biggest changes to my training. A couple weeks ago I was notified I was accepted into the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, California (near San Diego) and I am choosing to make the move! At the end of the 2014 season my coach (Christina Scherwin) let me know that she and her husband (Mark Fletcher) were moving to Connecticut to be closer to their ...continue reading

Ending on a high note

Yesterday I was a hero to an Austrian crowd after throwing a stadium record on my final throw. After what was feeling like a downward spiraling year, the small town of 5,000 people came together to put on a wonderful competition, which seemed to bring out the best in me. After the U.S. Championships in June you have two options as a track and field athlete; end your season and prepare for the next year, or go to Europe and see if you can ...continue reading

I survived

After 8 Days, 55 hours of traveling, and 4 competitions in 3 countries, I can officially say I survived. I didn’t end on a good note, but I still surprised myself. I finished the Karlstad Grand Prix in 6th place with a throw of 73.27m, but after all I have been through I am just happy I am still healthy enough to walk. I have been through a lot of injuries in my career, and doing two meets in one week had always been a lot for my ...continue reading

Falling flat in Finland

Yet another competition today marks the third in the last five days. After some exhausting travel over the last two days I can actually say I am not too surprise that I was a little flat today on the runway. I was in 5th most of the competition with a best of 75.70m until the last round where I was passed yet again. Even after all the travel I was feeling pretty good. I think jetlag is kind of a mental thing and not taking care of ...continue reading

Landing in javelin country

After 38 hours of travel I have finally arrived in the javelin mecca of the world; Finland. It’s been a long trip but I actually feel pretty good, and I couldn’t be more excited to throw today. I competed in Vancouver Canada on the 10th and immediately after throwing I ran to the shuttle bus to the hotel, and again on another bus to the airport where I just barely made my flight to New York that night. My competition at the Harry ...continue reading

Step in the right direction

Just finished up my first international competition of the year at the Victoria Track Classic last night. I threw 76.52m (251ft) to take third place overall. While it’s not near my 80m season best or my 83m personal best it is still a step in the right direction after a poor performance at the USA Championships  a little over a week ago. I failed to get a proper warmup at the USA Championships and it was a tough lesson to learn. Prize ...continue reading

The Grind

It has been a couple months since my last post because I wanted to take a break and just focus on the javelin and things have been going really well. After a really rough season opener at the Mt SAC relays I definitely had my doubts about the season and my progress this year. Training up to that point was going really well; strength was up, technical sessions were great, and I felt really fit. But results are the only real true barometer ...continue reading
